What is E-paper Display?

What is E-paper?

Electronic paper or E-paper or EPD(Electronic Paper Display), also sometimes called electronic ink, electrophoretic displays or e-ink, is a display device that mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. It forms images by rearranging charged pigment particles with an applied electric field. Unlike conventional backlit flat panel displays that emit light, electronic paper displays reflect light like paper. This makes them more comfortable to read, and provide a wider viewing angle than most light-emitting displays.

E-paper is bistable – no power is needed to retain an image, and reflective – ambient light reflects from the surface of the display. Many electronic paper technologies hold static text and images indefinitely without electricity. Flexible electronic paper uses plastic substrates and plastic electronics for the display backplane.

What can be E-paper used for?

Applications of E-paper include electronic shelf labels, E-book readers, Newspapers, Displays embedded in smart cards, Status displays, Mobile phones, Public transport timetables, Digital signage, and some other proposed applications like clothes, digital photo frames, information boards, and keyboards.

Benefits of E-paper

The main advantages of electronic paper over traditional LCD screens are paper-like readability and extremely low power consumption. E-paper reduces eyestrain since it simulates paper rather than a computer screen. E-paper is easier to read outdoors and in bright sunlight; therefore, it is perfect for all indoor and outdoor displays, such as traffic signs, retail shelf labels, interactive museum signs and notice boards passenger information board.

Electronic paper displays provide high-resolution and no glare visibility, allowing users to view text and pictures clearly and at any angle. E-paper power consumption is really minimal since electronic paper displays need no power to display an image; they simply use power to change the content.

Although E-paper is ideal for many display devices, it has disadvantages. It has a slow refresh rate. Hence fast moving applications can not be used on such display units.

Does E-paper color?

Print-Color e-paper E Ink can produce color for each pixel that is displayed on the screen. This includes red, green, blue, black or white. Colors can be combined to give you different colors or shades. The way it works is if you want light blue, blue will be toned down and white will be brighter. If you want orange, then yellow and red would be blended. It will ultimately display thousands of different color combinations, and perhaps even more for the final production model.

What are the popular sizes?

The popular EPD sizes in the market are 1.54”, 2.13”, 2.9”, 4.2/4.3” and 6” and customized segment EPDs.
